Farideh Sakhaeifar, Workers are taking photographs, 2008, inkjet prints, 18x24 inches each

This is certainly no a painting. However it does have an interesting concept. Not to mention the reptilian of lines and the 90 degree angles that occurs. It is a bit of a confusing optical illusion. Perhaps a piece of art can be confusing but almost draw the eyes instinctively words and away from it. I mean at first it just looks like a man at war or in prison or some other grim circumstance. One might feel pity for such a creature until you spot the hands holding up the white board of course. Does the artisan use photo shop or is there indeed someone behind the board?

Rebecca Bird, Plateau, 2014, Watercolor on paper, 14 x 20 inches

This painting is cool except for the part that there is something about it that I hate. Perhaps hate is a politically incorrect word or perhaps I'm in a bad mood. At first it's icy presence made me shudder and be filled with a sense of delight. However I found out the accursed thing was painted with water colors.

I don't feel like Ih ave the skills to accomplish such a feat. However looking at this it's interesting that if you are far enough away the picture becomes gray. The subject matter could be a mountain or a crumpled up piece of paper. Really the world is it's oyster. After all this would be a very different piece if the boxed were filled in.

If this wasn't a painting it might almost look like someone cut up paper and glued it to the canvas. Or it was sown into the canvas. It has a very block like linear layout. Notice how the line are all horizontal? I like the very simplistic approach to color and shading. Take the cloud for example. Have you ever seen a could that the grays were separated? Why no, surly not. and yet there is a representation of depth and layers within the separated shades of gray.

This is not a painting but it is silly and considered to be art. It is very simplistic but it gives me the idea that perhaps if you took a shape it could be replaced with only slight variations in the meaning. Well for sure the meanings would be different. However a viewer might be able to understand the original meaning as well as the new interpretations. It is also funny because culturally (in america at least) who hasn't sung into a hair brush as a microphone? Perhaps this is a broad statement but it puts the viewer into a lot of thoughts. Where as some of the other painting are more about technique this piece of art is more about content.

This is beautiful. I love the idea of painting water. What is scary is that it is hard enough to paint objects as it is but to paint something that is never really still, that is a magical feat. For sure no one would be fooled by the notion that this is real but perhaps a little bit of idealized realism is in play. Maybe, maybe not. Also the colors, while rather drab, are very much vivacious.

My hands

My hands
A poem by Madelyn Kingan

I stand two hands facing forwards
facing the truth
facing my hands

Course from the roughness of life
Weathered by wind
and rain
And

They have lifted
Pulled
Shaped and designed
My hands speak for themselves

They want nothing but to be of service
To pull others up from the ground and dust them off

In their strength they have carried my burdens
In life the ones to heavy
The ones that want to pull me down

They are Holding on
They are Holding on
I repeat they are Holding on

My hands have come together for prayer
In times of hardship
Times of rejoicing
Times

They speak for themselves

They are resilient

They are still my hands
